From its origins, the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla has espoused a policy of deep social commitment and attention to the more disadvantaged sectors of society and carries out various types of outreach activities to favor social mobility, development and the wellbeing and social progress of the population.
Prominent among these activities are literacy and alphabetization campaigns which are carried out in marginal and disadvantaged suburbs in the City of Puebla as well as in rural communities and hard to access townships in the Sierra Norte, Sierra Nororiental and Sierra Negra, as well as in the towns which lie on the slopes of the volcanoes.
As part of its regionalization process, the University has created units for the attention to regional development - Unidades de Apoyo Universitario al Desarrollo Regional (UNAUDER) – which provide outreach to the community through health campaigns, continuing education courses, workshops, consultancy and advice on productive projects, among various other activities.
In 1973, the State Government entrusted the University with running the State Civil Hospital, which has now become the university hospital, Hospital Universitario de Puebla. Today the hospital is a Level Three hospital care facility which not only provides affordable health care to the university community but also to broader sectors of society, especially from marginalized and disadvantaged communities, as well as being affiliated to the Popular Insurance federal program.
