Academic programs

When the College of the State opened its doors in 1825, the number of academic programs offered was very reduced and oriented mostly to the fields of Theology, Canon
and Civil law. At the beginning of the 20th century, it was the only institution to offer secondary studies (“Preparatoria”), and when it became a full-fledged university
in 1937 new programs were opened up in areas such as accounting and chemistry.

Before it was granted autonomy (1956), the University founded the Mathematics and Physics program; sometime later the schools of Business Administration and Philosophy and Letters were created.

Starting from 1970, there was a decided spurt in the growth of its academic offer and several new degree programs were opened up such as Veterinary Medicine, Agro-Hydraulics Engineering and Biology. The first two of these were created outside the City of Puebla thus starting a process of decentralization which would give rise to a
regionalization project by 1999.

Today, the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, offers 77 undergraduate degrees, 2 Associate degrees (Técnico Superior Universitario and Associate in Music) as well as Preparatory school studies. At the graduate level it offers 14 specializations, 55 master’s programs and 18 doctorates. With respect to its professional programs, all of those which can be evaluated have received accreditation and national recognition for their quality by national accrediting entities.

*Programs recognized by a national program for determining the quality of graduate studies: Padrón Nacional de Posgrados de Calidad (PNPC-Conacyt). Student enrollment in graduate programs is over 4,000, with 1,200 students enrolled in academic specialties, 2,600 in master’s programs and 300 in doctoral programs. In addition we should point out that over 35% of the graduate students, 1,400 students, are enrolled in one of the 44 programs recognized by Conacyt in its “quality” roster, Padrón Nacional de Posgrados de Calidad (PNPC-Conacyt).
